Soft Tissue Tumors

Soft tissue tumors are distinguished from bone tumors in that they primarily develop from cells with origins within fat, muscle, nerve, blood vessel, or appendages of the skin (sweat glands, hair follicles, etc). Since soft tissue tumors can be benign or malignant, a biopsy is an important first step in planning treatment. Malignant tumors, because they are cancerous and have the potential to spread to other areas of the body, require a more extensive and individualized treatment plan.

Drs. George Cierny and Doreen DiPasquale treat both benign and malignant soft tissue tumors at their facility in San Diego near the Los Angeles area. Malignant tumors are, in most cases, incurable without surgery. Treatment is based on a number of factors:

• The type of soft tissue sarcoma
• Size of the tumor
• Stage of the tumor
• Location in the body
• Patient’s age
• Patient’s general health
• Other internal/external aspects that may play a role
